Work experience article: SALTHILL CLEAN UP

A group of young people are doing their bit for the environment in Tower Hill, Clitheroe. The Tower Hill Youth Action Group, organised by local mother Lynn Wilson, have held litter-picking days at Salthill Playing Field and surrounding woodland.

The first outing saw a group of around twelve volunteers aged 5-18 collect fourteen bags of rubbish. They used bags and pick-up sticks provided by the council. Ultraframe employee Lee Martin also offered the services of his garden tools to cut back overgrown hedges.

Ultraframe litter was among the rubbish collected. Lynn, who is chairperson of the Tower Hill adult committee, said the Ultraframe rubbish blows over into the park because it is right next to it. “On the second clean-up there was no Ultraframe rubbish!” said Lynn.

The group are currently trying to obtain a “Big Lottery Fund” grant to improve the Salthill Field and surrounding area. Money from the grant would go towards new play equipment and picnic tables, a vegetable garden, sensory garden and bird boxes as well as funding activities for the area’s young people.

The group plans to hold monthly clean ups. The next one is expected to be over the weekend of July 5th-6th.
